Meeks shoes was established in 1901 by my great grandfather Edward Meeks. He ran away from home at the age of 16 with just a shilling in his pocket and boarded a train to Ashton-under-Lyne. Edwardmanaged to get a job as a sales assistant in a shoe shop, in Ashton, and eventually saved enough money to start his own shop, shown below. He became very involved in the local community and was awarded Alderman of the town.
