Sunproof was established in 2002 by Jouko Nykanen, who grew up in Sydney in the 1970's and went to the beach with no sun protection. Jouko and his childhood friends were the very last generation ofclueless beach grommets who fried their hides before the Australians got smart about skin damage and invented the Slip Slop Slap mantra in the 1980's. Living in Britain since 1989, Jouko discovered the then little used surfing beaches of the Gower Peninsula and spent many summer weekends there.
